Aztec Dancers Bring New Rhythm to San Angelo

SAN ANGELO, TX - Colorful feathers and costumes danced to the beat of the drum on Sunday afternoon as the Danza Guerreros Azteca Xochipilli performed before many at the St. Joseph's Festival. 

"We're actually just trying to expand a tradition where we're originally from in San Luis de la Paz in Guanajuato, Mexico," said Danza Guerreros Azteca Xochipilli Performer Mayra Flores.

St. Joseph's Catholic Church hosted the group on Sunday as part of the celebration of the feast of St. Joseph. It marked the fourth year that the Austin based group made it's way to West Texas to perform. 

"We call it Aztec dance because theirs a little bit more movement," said Flores. "When we move more the feathers actually do a little wave that creates a movement to create a connection with the animal and nature and whatever we're representing on our costume."

According to Flores the performance isn't just a form of entertainment, but an opportunity to connect spiritually. 

"A lot of these people join primarily because they had an obligation with a saint where they ask a favor for something in exchange," said Flores. "A lot of our members have a family member that is sick. Others are sick themselves so they want to offer this dance to them as a way to get their health back and just to honor them as well."
