American Plains Artists Show Opening Reception Thursday

SAN ANGELO, TX -- (Press Release) Fort Concho will host the annual American Plains Artists Show at the site’s Quartermaster Galleries with an opening free reception from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 28.

The show will run until Sunday, Aug. 5, and is free to view.

At the June 28 reception, Fiddle Fire Catering will provide the refreshments with entertainment by the Shady Grove Band and the Concho Cowboy Company. The Quartermaster building is near the intersection of Burgess Street at East Avenue C, accessible from Henry O. Flipper Street on the site’s northeast corner.

This year’s exhibit features 113 paintings, drawings and sculptures by 47 artists representing 17 states plus Canada. All of the paintings are for sale, with the proceeds benefiting the artists, the American Plains Artists organization and Fort Concho. The works cover a wide range of western themes, including farm and ranch heritage, the trans-Mississippi plains, mountains and vistas, and classic western characters and legends.

Guests can vote for their favorite work in the show, with the top choice announced after the show closes Aug. 5. Regular hours for the free show will be 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesdays-Saturdays, 1:30 p.m.-4:30 p.m. Sundays, and closed on Mondays.

The American Plains Artists was founded in Denver City, Texas, in 1982 by a small group of artists who banded together to celebrate through fine art the vast region known as the American Great Plains. The APA has members across the nation with a goal to “educate the public through traditional and representational artworks about the American Plains.” The APA first brought a show to Fort Concho in 2014. The site has since hosted a show annually.
