San Angelo Symphony Ready to Make Lasting Impact for Homecoming

SAN ANGELO, TX – The San Angelo Symphony is celebrating its return to the Murphey Performance Hall after six years of performing at other venues. The Symphony is ready to bring a variety of classical performances with a modern crossover twist for the 2017-2018 concert season.

“We were very grateful to have a place to play, and the McNease Convention Center was convenient for our patrons, but it [wasn't] our home,” Hector Guzman Director of the San Angelo Symphony said.

Guzman feels that after a six-year absence from the Murphey Performance Hall it feels like a welcomed homecoming for the Symphony to begin their new musical season.

“The ambiance is different, the atmosphere is different and that inspires us with coming back home,” Guzman added.

The Symphony has between 65 to 75 instrumentalists on stage depending on the concert.

Guzman believes the stage will be completely filled for their opening concert named The Return: The Doris Rousselot Memorial Concert, Oct 7. at 7 p.m. inside the Murphey Performance Hall at 72 W. College Ave. at City Hall.

The concert will feature two Russian composers, Rimsky-Korsakov Russian Easter Overture and a solo performance by American Violinist Stephanie Chase, playing Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto.

Chase placed as a top medalist at VII International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.

“Chase is an Internationally recognized violinist and has been praised as ‘one of the greatest violinists of this era’”, the San Angelo Symphony website reads.

“We are very grateful and proud that someone of that stature could join us for such an important event,” Guzman stated.

The second half of the concert will include music performance from three blockbuster movies to include Lord of the Rings, Gravity and James Cameron’s Avatar. The concert will close with a performance of the Pines of Rome (Respighi).

The concept of mixing classical music with modern film scores is expected to make a lasting impact for the Symphony’s homecoming.

“The film scores provide variety and will also show our audience that our orchestra can pretty much play anything,” Guzman stated.

The following is a list of other concerts for the 2017-2018 season:
