The Art of Secret Sushi

SAN ANGELO, TX — Throughout our city, there are a variety of buildings with historical value and unique architecture. Over the years, there have been many individuals with hopes and dreams of renovating some of these smaller buildings bringing something out of the ordinary to 'liven up' the culture.

One of these entrepreneurs that has made his aspirations a tremendous success is local artist Alejandro Castanon.  He is the owner and gallery director of the Vino Dipinte Art Gallery, located 602 Orient Street.  'Vino Dipinte' translates to 'painted wine' in English.

The U.S. Air Force veteran said he is originally from Mexico by way of Spain and Germany. He admits he is a bit of a 'travel junkie,' but has made San Angelo his home since 2011.

His goal was to bring art to the public in a new and fun way. Since 2011, Vino Dipinte has grown into a premiere gallery in San Angelo hosting 'paint and sip' sessions several times a week during the night and afternoon while presenting quality art shows to the public.

"The climate has changed in this industry and we are aiming at becoming San Angelo's first Artisan Atelier studio. This includes open walk-in craft hours, DIY classes, kids craft classes, and professional workshops", said Castanon. An Atelier is a workplace for an artisan or artisans.

On Saturday, sixteen guests witnessed the art of creating great Sushi, and then attempted to replicate what they have been taught.

For those who aren't familiar with the appetizer that is also sometimes served as a main course, traditionally, 'Sushi' a a Japanese dish consisting of small balls or rolls of vinegar-flavored cold cooked rice, served with a garnish of raw fish, vegetables, or egg.

Master Sushi creator Charlie Slack of San Angelo displayed his extraordinary skills, and assisted his patrons to create three Sushi dishes for themselves. It was called the 'Secret Sushi Class.'

"This is the first event of this type (Sushi) but last October, we held a cooking class led by Chef Tim Condon of the Angry Cactus. I named this event 'Secret' because of the exclusivity we are trying to create for the event. I don't believe this has been done before in San Angelo so we were hoping for the best," said Castanon.

Reservations are required for these events, as they sell out quickly. Castanon scheduled another one for July, but that one is close to selling out.

For anyone who missed these classes, please check out their website and follow them on Facebook for a schedule of upcoming events. He added, "We will be continuing this series of classes, once a month for now, with an 'Artisan' theme so our customers can experience more hands-on themes."
