San Angelo Native Records With the Stars

From Wall, Texas to Nashville, Tenn., Kyra Hunter is making her dreams come true.

“My parents always told me if you want to do something bad enough you can make it happen,” Hunter said. And she is doing just that.

Hunter is currently attending her second year of college at Belmont University where she is majoring in songwriting and minoring in music business.

“I’m sure everyone has that dream as a child to be a dancer, an actress or singer, but society tells you it won't happen,” Hunter said.

A career in music is exactly what Hunter is seeking.

“I would be happy working at a label or publishing company writing songs, but to write my own songs and perform them eventually--that is the dream,” Hunter said.

The 19-year-old first started performing on her own when she was a sophomore in high school, but her interest in music started at a young age.

“Both of my parents had an influence, but in different aspects,” Hunter said.

Her dad, Gus Constancio, would play different music gigs with a band around town.

“I have always been around music. He would pull me on stage and I was like five and of course I wasn’t going to be singing like Mariah Carey. But being on stage kind of made me go 'ah I might like this',” Hunter said.

She said her mother, Vanessa Constancio, influenced her to pursue songwriting.

“I always loved writing. My mom was an English teacher and I just loved words. It was always my favorite subject,” Hunter said.

After taking guitar lessons Hunter thought, “Why not try out songwriting?”

Hunter said, “In the back off my mind I always knew I wanted to pursue a career in music, but I have to say my parents really helped.”

This past summer Hunter’s dad was in contact with music producer Ken Caillat who has produced a number of records for Fleetwood Mac and is father to Colbie Caillet. After hearing samples of Hunter’s music, Caillet invited her into his studio in California.

Hunter spent a week their working with music writers and was able to record two songs in the studio.

“It was really cool to have the opinion of the professionals and to get to hear what they have to say about my songs,” Hunter said.

Written during her time with Caillet, her song, “When Love is a Memory”, has recently been put into a music video.

Cody Broadway, a native to San Angelo, filmed the music video for Hunter. After listening to the song, Broadway, a graduate of New York Film Academy, wrote up a script.

The video was filmed in San Angelo and incorporated parts of downtown.

Hunter said it was important for her video to be filmed in her hometown because it is the communities of Wall and San Angelo that first supported her.

“These are the people that had your back from the vey beginning. My community  has always showed [sic] excitement and support for me,” Hunter said.

She is hopeful for her future in music but said, “You never know how it will end up, but at least you can say you tried and gave it your all, and look back rather than never knowing how things could have turned out.”

Although the pressures of the industry are inevitable, Hunter said it is her faith that pushes her forward.

“I don’t know how I would get through all the stress. You have to have faith. Growing up in a Christian household has given me the ability to believe that great things can happen, but to also trust that there is a bigger plan than what we hope to have,” Hunter said.
