A Message from Interim President Angie Wright of Angelo State

SAN ANGELO, TX – The following was sent to the Angelo State community from Interim President Angie Wright.

"Greetings to the ASU Ram Family,

"The tragic events of a week ago in Minneapolis have left an imprint on the nation, including the students, faculty and staff of Angelo State University. For our very diverse student population, these images don’t feel like a faraway event, because they represent a constant fear they live with daily. Virtually everyone in our community has stopped to reflect on these events and what they mean for our country and our society.

"What is required of us as a university community is to have an honest conversation about race, and racial injustice, and to demonstrate compassion and empathy for those whose background and experience is dissimilar to ours. Our diversity is a strength, but only if we have the courage to embrace those differences while celebrating common Ram Fam values.

"Accordingly, I want to reaffirm that Angelo State is a university community that welcomes all and includes all, because we exist to advance the dreams of all. Our students are drawn from over 40 states and numerous foreign countries.  That is a great strength, but it also means that all of us – the administration, faculty, staff, and students alike – must treat every person in this community with dignity, respect and decency.

"We will continue to work with colleagues across the Texas Tech University System, the Angelo State University Police Department, and our elected officials and civic leaders here in San Angelo to ensure your safety and well-being. In the meantime, I want to call attention to the many resources that are here for students, faculty, staff, and administrators.  We have first-rate health and counseling services and the crisis helpline to support you, and additional educational resources and programs are provided through the Office of Multicultural and Student Activities Programs and Housing and Residential Programs.

"As our nation experiences protest, unrest and violence, we recommit as the ASU Ram Family to a civil dialogue about our many differences, and our common aspirations. We believe a better future awaits us as a university community, as a state, and as a nation, if we can unite around common values of dignity, respect and empathy for all.

"We look forward to being able to resume our campus life, and I wish all of you the best in the weeks and months to come."

Sincerely,

Angie Wright
Interim President
Angelo State University
