SAN ANGELO, TX — Angelo State University’s Mu Gamma chapter of the Kappa Delta Pi (KDP) international honor society for education has received a 2019 Achieving Chapter Excellence (ACE) Award from the KDP national organization for chapter activities during 2017-19.
Established in 1995 and awarded every two years, the ACE Award is the highest honor a KDP chapter can earn. It recognizes KDP chapters that meet strict eligibility criteria and exhibit outstanding programming, such as initiation banquets, fundraising and community service projects, in support of KDP goals. Only 17 of the more than 650 KDP chapters won 2019 ACE Awards.
This is the third ACE Award for ASU’s Mu Gamma chapter, which was also honored in 2009 and 2013.
Additionally, the ASU chapter’s faculty counselor, Dr. Leah Carruth, assistant professor of teacher education, was named the 2018-19 Regional Chapter Counselor of the Year for the KDP West Region – and the ASU chapter’s former student president, Kimberly Maier of Crockett, who graduated in May, won a Distinguished Chapter Officer Award for 2018-19.
All the award recipients will be recognized at KDP’s 53rd Annual Convocation in October in Norfolk, Va. Carruth will also make a presentation titled “Creative Learning Centers: Activities Relevant to all Children,” and she will be accompanied by five student KDP members, who will present their Chapter Engagement Poster. Students who will attend the convocation include:

- Katelynn Savell of Andrews
The ASU chapter will also be in the running for the Dr. Florence B. Stratemeyer Award for Chapter Excellence, the “Ace of ACEs” award, which will be presented at the convocation.
ASU’s Mu Gamma chapter has 260 active members, and all are working toward teacher certification or a graduate-level degree or certification.
