Angelo State Psychology Prof Wins Award for Leadership

SAN ANGELO, TX — Dr. Sangeeta Singg, a professor of psychology at Angelo State University, received the Jimmy Alvarez Friend of Counseling Award from the Three Rivers Counseling Association (TRCA) at its annual awards ceremony earlier this month.

Given “For Outstanding Contribution to the Counseling Profession,” the award is named for the late Jimmy Alvarez, a longtime licensed professional counselor in West Texas, ASU alum and former student of Singg’s at ASU.

“Many former students I trained in our counseling psychology graduate program are members of the TRCA,” Singg said. “This award means the world to me because I was nominated and honored by my former students who are licensed and successful professionals.”

This is also just the latest award for Singg, whose other honors include:

  • ASU Alumni Association Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award
  • Outstanding Leadership in Psychology Award from the Psychological Association of Greater West Texas (PAGWT)
  • ASU President’s Award for Faculty Excellence in Leadership/Service
  • Phi Delta Kappa Research Award

“The award by the TRCA recognized my over 37 years of work as a trainer and supporter of counselors,” Singg said, “which to me feels like a ‘lifetime achievement’ award because my training and whole career has been devoted to training counselors. Teaching at ASU was my first full-time job.”

Singg has also been named a “Top Psychologist in San Angelo, Texas” by the International Association of Healthcare Professionals and a “San Angelo Woman to Watch” by the San Angelo Business & Professional Women’s Club.

An ASU faculty member since 1981, Singg teaches both undergraduate and graduate psychology classes in the Department of Psychology and Sociology. She also developed the counseling psychology graduate program and served as the program director.

Also active in the community, Singg has served on the board of the local American Heart Association for almost 35 years, including four terms as president, and was a founding member of the original San Angelo AIDS Foundation. She has also served as president of the PAGWT.

A native of the Punjab state of India, Singg holds a bachelor’s degree from Punjab University, a master’s degree from Mississippi State University, and master’s and doctoral degrees in counseling psychology from East Texas State University (now Texas A&M-Commerce). She is also a licensed psychologist, a certified applied clinical nutritionist, and a purification and weight loss coach.

Based in San Angelo, the TRCA is affiliated with the Texas Counseling Association and serves Coke, Coleman, Concho, Crockett, Irion, Runnels, Schleicher, Sterling, Sutton and Tom Green counties. More details are available at www.txca.org/tca/TRCA.asp
