ASU VP To Join Board of Directors for Education Reach for Texas,

SAN ANGELO, TX – The vice president for student affairs and enrollment management at Angelo State University (SAEM,) Dr. Javier Flores, joins the Education Reach for Texans (ERT) Board of Directors.

"Flores will serve a three-year term that begins immediately and will run through December 2020. The board meets quarterly, including the annual ERT Convening each June. As a board member, Flores will help facilitate the sharing of ideas between higher education and child welfare officials geared toward the implementation of campus-based support programs for students who are alumni of foster care.

In a message to Flores, ERT President Sheila Bustillos wrote, “We are inspired by the work you are doing to support foster care alumni in their pursuit of post-secondary education…You were chosen based on your years of expertise, professionalism, and knowledge in the field. We know that you will add substantive guidance to our current leadership.”

According to the 2017 Texas Higher Education Foster Care Liaisons Information and Reference Guide, “Research shows that although more than 80% of youth in foster care report wanting to go to college, only 2-9% who attend college receive a bachelor’s degree.”

Flores said, “I am honored and humbled to serve on the ERT Board while enhancing higher education opportunities for youth formerly in foster care. Our work informing youth in foster care about higher education opportunities and support services must accelerate.”

A native of Sonora, Flores joined the ASU administration in July 2012. He oversees Admissions, Financial Aid, Scholarship Programs, Career Development, Housing and Residential Programs, Student Affairs, Affiliated Military and Veteran Services, Counseling Services, Student Disability Services, Multicultural and Student Activities Programs, Student Life, Student Government Association, and University Recreation and Intramurals. He also provides leadership in the implementation and coordination of ASU’s Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) grants from the U.S. Department of Education.

Prior to joining ASU, Flores spent 13 years at Howard College in Big Spring, where he served as dean of student services, vice president of student services and then provost. He also served 16 months as interim provost for Howard College’s SouthWest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf.

Flores earned his Bachelor of Arts in political science from Texas Tech University, his Master of Arts in educational management and development from New Mexico State University and his Doctor of Education in administration of higher education from Texas Tech."
