Suspect Killed In Officer-Involved Shooting

SAN ANGELO, TX — The San Angelo Police Department has confirmed the suspect involved in the officer-involved shooting has passed away.

According to a statement released by SAPD, at approximately 4:19 p.m., San Angelo Police were dispatched to the 700 block of Wicklow Court for the report of an unknown problem.

While the officers were in route they were informed that the call was related to domestic violence and that the suspect was armed with a gun.

The responding officers located the suspect’s vehicle fleeing the area and attempted to conduct a probable cause traffic stop. The suspect refused to stop and a slow-speed vehicle pursuit began.

The pursuit ended near the 4600 block of Arden Road when the suspect exited his vehicle holding a handgun. The suspect then fled northbound on foot, crossing Arden Road into an open field.

The officers instructed the armed man to stop and drop his gun; however, the suspect disregarded the commands and continued to flee further into San Angelo State Park property and began firing rounds.

Officers returned fire and struck the suspect. The officers than began rendering life-saving measures; however, the suspect succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The suspect was identified as 29-year-old Roberto Hernandez, Jr. of San Angelo.

The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting alongside the San Angelo Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division and Office of Professional Standards. The involved officers have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard operating procedure for officer-involved shootings. Here is the initial report.

Stop and comply is pretty simple. Now these peace officers have to live with this experience that did not have to happen.
