Photos: New Tom Green Jail Opens this Week

SAN ANGELO, TX – The new Tom Green County Jail is scheduled to open Tuesday and officials expect to move all inmates from the old jail to the new jail in one day.

Tom Green County Commissioners Tuesday will acknowledge the receipt of the Certificate of Occupancy for the new detention facility issued by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.

The certificate was issued following an inspection last week.

The new jail has been a long project and will mark the end of an era for the Tom Green County Jail.  The jail has been remodeled at least twice in its history at its current location on the corner of Harris Ave. and Irving St. across the street from the Courthouse.

County officials say the expect to transfer the 400-plus inmates in 12 to 14 hours Tuesday.

Commissioners selected the location for the new facility on U.S. 67 N planning on using both part of the existing jail downtown and the new jail but the TCJS requirements of two complete and separate jail staffs was not cost effective so the court voted to expand construction of the new jail to house 556 beds.

The downtown facility may be remodeled into office space but that decision hasn't been finalized.

The cost of the new Tom Green County Jail eventually rose to about $70.6 million.

... this "New" TGC Jail (Justice center) was built with more logic and better security than the current TGC Justice Center that's downtown was during the two previous remodels. I have never been an inmate of the current justice center but I did work almost 8 years for the TGC Building Maintenance department and I have my own opinions about those two remodels, and I will not comment any further my opinions for fear of "backlash" from the current TGC Commissioner's. I will comment that I do agree with the New location of the New TGC Jail (Justice Center) ... there was some discussion of this new location back in the mid 2000's when I was employed there. Good decision by whomever was involved on this New Location.

Some extra beds for those dummies that want to participate in civil disobedience around Tom Green County.

Funny how people will protest for Marxism but not push incessantly to ensure that the accusations surrounding Jeffrey Epstein, and the implications that top US officials were involved in his sex trafficking, are investigated.

... I'm curious about why you chose to post your comment on the article of the new TGC jail ? I watched the Netflix Special on Jeffrey Epstein only because I was curious of just who was ... or is...
"Jeffrey Epstein". To be honest I had never heard of the man ( ... calling that POS a man doesn't fit because he's not a Man... he's a POS ... is my thoughts. )
After watching the Special on Netflix I thought..." How can those celebrities and famous athletes even stand to be around a pos like that? It's a unjust world and our Justice system seems to be allowing this sexual abuse go on. Hopefully... someday soon the justice system will get an overhaul and people like Mr Epstein will be held to by Law for their actions (...yuk... even putting a Mr in front of his last name leaves a horrible taste on my tongue...) but ... I has been trying to figure out why you posted your comment on Jeffrey Epstein on an article about the new TGC jail opening ... but I realize now maybe why you did.
