Officer Injured by Fireworks Shot at Him

AMARILLO, TX – An officer with the Amarillo Police Department was injured on Independence Day after someone threw a lit firework in their Patrol Car.

On July 4th at 10:12 PM, APD officers were dispatched to the area of Hamlet Park on a large group of people, some believed to be juveniles, shooting off fireworks. When the first officer arrived, a mortar shell was shot through his open driver side window.

The firework exploded on the officer causing injuries to his upper and lower body and damaging the interior of the vehicle.

Other officers responded but could not locate the suspect due to the large number of fireworks being shot at them by the crowd. The injured officer was transported to a local area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers witnessed multiple people at the park filming this incident with their cell phones.

The Amarillo Police Department asks that anyone with evidence of this assault on our officer, or anyone who might know the identity of the suspect/suspects, call the Criminal Investigation Division at 378-4258 or 378-9468. Anyone wishing to remain anonymous can call Amarillo Crime Stoppers at 374-4400. Tips can also be given anonymously online at www.amapolice.org or on the Amarillo Crime Stoppers P3 mobile app.
