Police: Wanted Felon Arrested After Shooting Himself in the Groin

SAN ANGELO, TX – On Friday, February 14, San Angelo Live reporters arrived at the Dollar Tree located on 29th Street after scanner reports indicated a possible shooting victim was at that location. At the time there was no information available regarding the incident at the scene.

On Monday afternoon, the San Angelo Police Department released information on the shooting victim and the connection the victim had to a 2019 crime.

Last Friday, when officers arrived at the scene, a witness told them he had heard a “pop” and then noticed a man with blood pouring down the inside of his leg standing by a silver Cadillac. By the time police had arrived at the scene, the victim had left.

Believing the victim would seek medical attention, officers went to Shannon Medical Center where they observed the Cadillac arriving. Inside the vehicle, they located a male passenger identified as Joshua Thomas Bonner, a wanted felon. Bonner was suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the groin.

SAPD officers then proceeded to apply a C-A-T- tourniquet in an effort to stop the extensive bleeding Bonner was experiencing until Shannon Medical Center Staff could take over.

The subsequent investigation revealed Bonner accidentally shot himself after he mishandled a firearm that had been inside his clothing. After being released from medical care Bonner was arrested.

According to SAPD, on February 14, 2019, Bonner was involved in an early morning burglary of a residence at the 2700 block of Tech Ave. Police alleged Bonner used force to enter the backdoor of the occupied residence. Bonner stole a purse and the resident of the home escaped unharmed and sought help from a neighbor.

Through their investigation police identified Bonner as a person of interest after obtaining surveillance video of a masked-suspect who was driving a black Nissan Titan pickup truck.

The next day, the Taylor County Sheriff’s Department conducted a traffic stop on the black 2010 Nissan Titan. The driver, identified as Bonner, was subsequently arrested for Manufacture Delivery of Controlled Substance and Unlawful Possession of Firearm by Felon. Bonner was released after posting a  surety bond.

After learning Bonner had certain items relating to the San Angelo burglary inside the truck, San Angelo Police Detective James Russell applied for a search warrant. During the search, investigators seized several items that linked Bonner to the burglary.  An arrest warrant was then issued for Bonner for Burglary of Habitation.

In addition to his warrants for Grand Jury Indictment-Burglary of Habitation and Parole Violation, with the original offense being Robbery), Bonner has been placed on U.S. Marshal Hold and ATF Hold.
