Woman Sentenced to Prison for Smothering Her Own Mother

ODESSA, TX – Traci Alaniz was sentenced to 80 years in prison after a jury found her guilty of smothering her mother to death. Her mother Mary Hensley, 81, was found dead in her home with cuts and bruises all over her body.

According to CBS7, Alaniz was charged with 1st-degree murder back in March after she confessed to hitting her mother in the mouth and then putting a pillow over her face until she stopped breathing. During an interview, she told law enforcement, “I killed my mom.”

In an affidavit, Alaniz’s daughter, Ashley, described the abuse that Mary endured at the hands of her mother. She admitted she saw her mother hitting her grandmother several times over several months. Hensley also routinely slapped her mother and caused the skin to come off her arms by digging her fingernails into her skin. She admitted she never reported the abuse to law enforcement. Ashley was charged with failing to report abuse.

The case was prosecuted by First Assistant District Attorney Lisa Borden and Assistant District Attorney Melissa Williams. Luis Chavez represented the defendant, according to a press release.
