Jeremy Perez Sentenced to 40 Years in 2017 Murder

SAN ANGELO, TX – Nearly two years after the brutal murder of Andrew Martinez, one of the two individuals charged with his murder pled guilty. Jeremy Perez, 27, accepted a guilty plea to the first-degree felony charge in the Tom Green County courthouse.

Jeremy Perez was accused by witnesses as being the suspect who shot Martinez point-blank; after driving to a residence on 24th Street in search of the victim. According to court documents Martinez had multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead after being transported to Shannon Medical Center.

Perez’s guilty plea includes serving 40 years in the institutional division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, paying court costs and paying $20,989.55 in restitution, in collaboration with the co-defendants in the case. Perez will receive credit for time served, beginning November of 2017.

After Perez pled guilty a member of Andrew Martinez’s family read a victim impact statement to the court. One of Martinez’s sister talked about the emotional hardship that the death of her brother has been for their family and begrudged Perez for robbing her brother the opportunity to live a full life.

She stated that their biggest fear was that Perez would get out of prison and take someone's life again, just as he had done after ”putting 6 bullets” in her brother.

The punishment for a first-degree felony ranges anywhere from 5-99 years, but Perez had a previous felony conviction raising the minimum he could serve to 15 years. Perez also gave up his right to appeal.
