Man Arrested For Breaking Into Ex-Girlfriends House to Rob and Assault Her

SAN ANGELO, TX – The San Angelo Police Department arrested a man who was wanted for breaking into his ex-girlfriend apartment, choking her, punching her, stealing her cash, and then fleeing the scene.

On March 31, SAPD was dispatched to the Nevada East Apartments for an assault that had occurred. When officers arrived they met with the victims of the assault. They told officers that Ruben Gonzales, 27, was an ex-boyfriend of the girl and that he was the person who had assaulted them.

The ex-girlfriend told police that her and her date were getting ready to get dinner when they heard a loud banging on the door. She instantly knew the person behind the door was Gonzales due to a phone call she received from him earlier demanding a phone charger he had left behind. The two did not answer the door and the knocking continued for several minutes before Gonzales opened the unlocked door.

Once inside Gonzales told the date to go outside. The date took this as if the two were going to fight in the parking lot of the apartment. On the way out the door the ex-girlfriend screamed out  "Do not leave me alone with him." He instantly turned around but he was already in the doorway and Gonzales pushed him outside and locked the door.

Once alone with the ex-girlfriend, Gonzales confronted her about the date and then gave her a "bear hug" squeezing as hard as he could. She managed to escaped and ran for the door, but Gonzales grabbed her and put her over his shoulder. He took her to her bedroom and threw her on the floor. Gonzales then asked about the sexual relationship between the two and put his hand under her dress in order to see if she was wearing underwear.

She then attempted to escape but was stopped by Gonzales hands being wrapped around her throat. According to the affidavit, she was not able to breath or talk for several seconds. She then curled into a ball to protect herself and saw Gonzales taking the phone charger and a handful of cash. Gonzales then saw the girl curled up and began punching her repeatedly. The girl finally broke free from the attack and managed to get to the door.

While the date was outside he was attempting to contact police. He saw the girl running out of the house with apparent injuries followed by Gonzales with the girl's phone and a pocket full of items. Gonzales then pushed the girl down once again and the date stepped in between the two which made Gonzales push and then punch the date. After the date was punched, the ex-girlfriend demanded the phone. Gonzales gave it to her and then drove away in his Black Honda Civic.

After this day Police could not locate Gonzales. His listed address was his mothers address but he did not currently live there. He also did not have a working phone number and was reportedly homeless. On April 10, Gonzales was wanted and as of May 15 he was arrested and charged with burglary of a habitation with intent to commit other felony.

He is currently in the Tom Green County Jail on a $50,000.
