Inmate Mysteriously Dies at State Prison in Abilene

ABILENE, TX — The Texas Department of Criminal Justice is being investigated by the Office of the Inspector General about a death of an inmate in the French Robertson Unit in Abilene.

According to reports, 28-year-old Victor Alfonso Reyna was found dead in his cell Monday.

TDCJ Director of Communications Jeremy Desel tells KTXS there were no signs of foul play.

Reyna's family in Corpus Christi say they weren't notified by TDCJ about Reyna's death. The TDCJ claimed the brother of the dead inmate, Eduardo Gonzales, was notified.

Preliminary autopsy results are not available. The TDCJ said the autopsy is not complete.

Reyna's family said he suffered from asthma and that he was up for parole in May after serving 11 years in prison.
