The Twisted Tale of the San Angelo Woman Accused in Early Morning Stabbing

SAN ANGELO, TX — Miranda Ortiz, otherwise known as Miranda Donley, was arrested on April 6 in the early morning hours for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after an altercation in the 200 block of Koberlin St. At the time of this incident, Ortiz was was out on bail, accused of four counts of aggravated sexual assault of a child.

The latest complaint, accusing her of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, was filed with Judge Howard’s office. It offers five different perspectives of what happened in the arrest affidavit.

The first narrative came from the victim, who had been stabbed on his left and right forearms, right thumb, and right the side of his head. He stated that Ortiz’s boyfriend had come by the apartment to either talk or gather his things (it is unclear in the document). While the boyfriend was upstairs, Ortiz was downstairs waiting and complaining about her boyfriend being upstairs. Ortiz was not invited or allow inside the apartment. But she came upstairs and started knocking on the door until she was allowed inside to quell her protestations.

Her boyfriend came to the door and the discussion turned into a shouting match. Ortiz was asked to be quiet and finally invited inside, but she was advised to stay in the foyer area. Once Ortiz was inside, the victim and another witness said something to Ortiz. The complaint doesn't clarify exactly what was said.

The victim stated that he came out of his room and walked towards the door where Ortiz was standing. The victim claimed he tripped into Ortiz’s boyfriend, which resulted in Ortiz being pushed into the wall.

The defendant’s boyfriend stepped in between the victim and Ortiz so there could be no physical fight. Yet, the victim claimed the defendant hit him and he hit her back. That is when the victim started to feel a sharp pain and the sensation of warm blood running down his arms. He said he never saw the knife the defendant used during the assault.

The defendant, Ortiz, stated she may have said something that the victim didn’t like, which resulted in him charging at her and attacking her.

Ortiz claimed that she was struck in the head multiple times and one hit almost made her “black out.” Ortiz claimed that she feared for her life, and removed a knife from her pocket.

Then, the plot thickens with other witness statements.

Witness #1, the defendant’s boyfriend, claimed that the parties in the apartment were threatening Ortiz with a large wrench (which is the first time a wrench is mentioned in the court document at all). The boyfriend took the wrench from the victim and the victim hit the defendant in the head with his fist, which resulted in the stabbing.

Witnesses #2 and #3 were in the house during the time of the altercation. Witness #2 claimed the victim was attacked by Ortiz first and the victim was only protecting himself. Witness #3 also stated that the altercation began because the defendant started being aggressive first saying, “N**** I will stab you.”

This case may be interesting if it ever makes it to trial. In the meantime, Ortiz is being held in the Tom Green County Jail on a $30,000 bond for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. At least for a while. Meagan White, assistant DA, filed a motion to deny Ortiz bond. "The Texas Constitution provides for denial of bail at the outset for a defendant who is charged with committing a new felony offense while out on bond for a previously indicted felony offense," White's motion states.
