Chickens Come Home to Roost After Cockfighting Ring Gets Busted

LEVELLAND, TX -- Hockley County Sheriff deputies arrested two men and seized more than 100 birds in an alleged cockfighting ring just west of Lubbock.

Authorities said both suspects, Kenny Grubbs and Eulogio Guerrero Jr., were charged with felony cockfighting counts following last Friday's search of a property near Levelland.

More than 40 people were detained as deputies searched the area. Of those individuals detained, 37 of them were cited for misdemeanors related to cockfighting.

Cockfighting is illegal in Texas under Texas Penal code 42.105.

Authorities found 107 birds at the scene, along with sharp blades associated with cockfighting.

Five birds were found deceased during the search.

Cockfighting is illegal for a reason, for the various crimes that result against the animals and participants as well.In S.Fla,(my hometown) my boss and I were plant shopping for a customer and were given directions to a place that may have hanging asked. We went to where we thought it was,and down a mile long curvy winding packed with huge solid potholes of a dirt road.We came to a large place like a chicken barn farm and we're greeted by two Spanish men pointing shotguns at us and demanding to know why we were there. We told them "to buy some plants"! "No plants here, you go"! So we didn't waste any time bopping back down that road of holes -quickly! It was a cock fighting pavilion, we later surmised, and the condition of the road was intended to slow down the police vehicles long enough to alert them to a raid and get away...Scary time.
