Police Engage in Standoff Near Carl Ray Johnson Rec Center

SAN ANGELO, TEXAS -- At around 11 a.m. this morning, officers responded to a convenience store in the 800 block of N Chadbourne for a report of an aggravated robbery.  

According to Sgt. Matthew Vaughn with the San Angelo Police Department, a man, later identified as Julio Enriquez, 56, was attempting to take merchandise from the convenience store that he was unable to pay for. After taking what he needed,  Enriquez pulled a broken glass bottle from his backpack and threatened the sales clerk with the jagged end. He took the merchandise and ran. 

As the first police unit arrived, they quickly grabbed video surveillance footage and photos of the subject and distributed them out to nearby officers. The officers then canvassed the area. 

A short time later, an officer located Enriquez at the corner of 11th Street and Farr Street, in front of the Carl Ray Johnson Recreation Center. As the officers attempted to take Enriquez into custody, Enriquez pulled out the broken bottle and held it to his neck. A small standoff ensued and officers quickly began negotiating with him to drop the weapon and not to injure himself. 

Simultaneously, another officer slowly snuck up behind Enriquez to try and tase him with a tasor gun. However, the tasor malfunctioned  and did not work correctly. A police sergeant on scene then used a less lethal kinetic energy “bean bag” shotgun round and struck Enriquez in the hip area, knocking him to the ground. Due to the shot, Enriquez dropped his weapon and officers were able to take him into custody.

Enriquez will be arrested for aggravated robbery.
