14-year-old Texan Accidentally Kills Twin Brother While Shooting A Snake

DAYTON, TX – Liberty County authorities say a 14-year-old Dayton boy accidentally shot and killed his brother while shooting at a snake.

Sheriff’s officials say the twins retrieved .22 rifles and were shooting at a snake in a water filled ditch in Southeast Texas.  One of the boys bent over toward the snake just as his brother aimed and fired.  Officials say the boy was shot in the head.

The Sheriff’s office doesn’t expect any charges will be filed.

Capt. Ken DeFoor said in a statement that the shooting is a lesson for families, "These guns that are left unsupervised in the home, there should definitely be training on how do you properly use these weapons. These boys were 14 years old. They were certainly old enough to be taught the proper handling of firearms, what they should and should not do. Never ever put yourself in the front of one like was done today. It was a thoughtless act that resulted in a tragic accident."

Dayton is 35 miles northeast of Houston.
