Del Rio Man Catches Local Police Shooting on Video

A Del Rio man filmed an altercation between law enforcement and a driver of an 18-wheeler on U.S. 90 east at Charles Drive in east Del Rio Tuesday afternoon. The suspect driving the truck was shot and killed by police, KENS in San Antonio reported.

According to the report, police said the man was threatening citizens with a machete and police were called just after 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

In the video, Del Rio Police Department officers and Val Verde County Sheriff’s Deputies with vehicles had surrounded the truck. As the truck begins to move forward, then backward, many gunshots ring out multiple times.

Del Rio Mayor Robert Garza confirmed the shooting in a Facebook post. He said the suspect threatened people inside the adjacent convenience store with a machete and, “later attempted to run over some officers,” with his truck, as seen in the video. No law enforcement officer was injured, Garza wrote.

The incident happened near Val Verde Park Estates, a low income residential area towards Laughlin Air Force Base on the east side of town. One block east is the cemetery.

Del Rio Police Chief Waylon Bullard told KENS that the Texas Rangers are investigating the incident.
