UPDATE: Boat Left In Gear Leads To Girl Caught In Propeller

SAN ANGELO, TX -- An 11-year-old girl was rescued on Sunday at about 2:30pm after being caught in a boat propeller on Lake Nasworthy located off Red Bluff Ramp Road.

According to San Angelo LIVE's reporter on the scene, the accident occurred about 50-feet offshore with the young girl suffering lacerations on both legs.

San Angelo Police Officer Barry Wike told San Angelo LIVE! that the boat was borrowed and the driver of the boat was unaware that it was still in gear when the passengers of the boat exited the vessel and entered the water leading to a propeller of the boat making contact with the 11-year-old girl.

The victim was treated on the scene and was immediately transported to the hospital via ambulance. The accident remains under investigation.

The incident was the first reported boating accident of the July 4th weekend.

Prayers for this girl. There needs to be a safety guard that goes over the propeller so this doesn't happen again. People ski and get off and on the back of the boat which is another accident waiting to happen. Boaters please be careful of where your passengers are and what they are doing.

Safety guard? How about a dumbass guard?! Morons shouldn’t operate boats if they are unfamiliar with the controls! In order to license a boat, one must demonstrate they know how to operate their boat & have all the necessary gear on board. Since this boat was borrowed, none of that applies, unfortunately. Boats & stupid are a recipe for disaster.

As unfortunate as this injury to a child is, putting a "safety guard" on it, or every other hazard that exists in this world, is utterly impossible. While I hope this girl is able to make a full recovery, and avoids amputation that is common in these types of accidents, I suspect that this incident was the result of any combination of the following ; borrowed boat, inexperienced operator, perhaps no boater safety class (mandatory for those younger than I), inattention or distraction, and last but not least, possible alcohol use.
Engineering or legislating the danger out of life is an unachievable fantasy for those who don't want to face the reality that daily life is now, and forever will be.....dangerous.
That being said, as a very experienced boater, I suggest to all others.....when stationary and passengers want to swim......KILL THE MOTOR!!

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has weighed in on this accident. She has stated that it is all Trump's fault for allowing U.S. Citizens to keep enough money that they can afford to go boating. She is currently working on a House Bill that will prevent accidents like this by making it illeagel for U.S. Citizens to own boat's that have propellors. If this boat had no propellor the accident would not have occured.
