What Happened to the Deer Injured in Crash with Motorcyclist on Sherwood Way?

SAN ANGELO, TX-- The deer that was injured in traffic Monday afternoon has been euthanized according to the Game Warden's Office.

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Game Warden Lt. David Hopkins said the deer was hopping across Sherwood Way heading towards the NAPA Auto Parts when she was struck and collapsed in the turning lane.

Bystanders then called in about the deer and the Game Warden arrived to the scene. The deer appears to be injured in the pictures above.

The Game Warden and two other men subdued the deer and  then tied its legs with tow ropes and placed in the bed of the Game Warden's truck.

"We had to euthanize the animal, because its injuries were too severe. We do not have any type of rehabilitation for injured animals," according to Lt. Hopkins.

Deer sightings inside the San Angelo city limits are rare but not unheard of.

Deer are frequently seen in the Red Arroyo area and other green belt areas and in neighborhoods on the outskirts of town.

Residents in southwest San Angelo subdivisions report deer damaging landscape plants.

According to Greg Creacy with TPWD, each year in the US, about 29,000 people are injured and more than 200 people are killed in deer/vehicle collisions.

An estimated 1.5 million deer are killed annually resulting in more than $ 1 billion in property damage.

I guess using the word euthanized is just a feel good word for this story when actually taking it out on a desolate road and putting a .40 caliber bullet through the top of it's head is how it's done........

I’ve always found it funny that deer belong to the State of Texas before and after it collides with your car, but not the millisecond that it comes in contact with your car, causing potentially thousands of dollars in damage. Shoot a deer illegally and you are required to compensate the state for the “replacement value” of that deer. However, if that deer causes damage to your vehicle, the state is not responsible.
