Chain-Reaction Crashes Claim Lives of Sisters on I-20

ABILENE, TX-- UPDATE: Abilene Chief of Police Stan Standridge says the crash that claimed the lives of sisters began when the rear axle of a utility vehicle sheared off near mile marker 20.

After an i-beam carrying 18-wheeler was forced to stop to avoid the wreck. A black minivan avoided the 18-wheeler but was rear ended by a full-size pickup truck, killing the two sisters in the minivan according to Standridge.  The mother of the kids was transported to the Hendrick Medical Center. The identities of the victims will not be released until the next of kin is notified.

"My heart is hurting for these kids," Standridge told the press.

Standridge would go on to say the family is "local" but not from Abilene proper.

The first of the two deadly crashes happened 8:15 a.m., reported KTXS

The two crashes happened in both the east and westbound lanes of I-20.

The second crash happened when cars were slowing down as they passed by and were rear ended.

The road is still closed and will be for at least three hours according to Standridge.
