Police: Alcohol Suspected in High-Speed Crash into Downtown Tree Over Weekend

SAN ANGELO, TX — The crash into the tree on Twohig near Koenigheim early Sunday morning may have been caused by drunk driving, police said.

Sunday morning at around 1:45 a.m., a westbound, late model Ford F-150 sideswiped a tree in the median and spun out of control. The driver was trapped inside the cab and had to be cut out using the San Angelo Fire Department’s Jaws-of-Life.

According to San Angelo police, a blood test for the driver’s blood-alcohol content, or BAC, was ordered but it takes time for the results to come back from the lab. “Alcohol is listed as a possible contributing factor,” said SAPD Spokeswoman Tracy Gonzalez.

According to the preliminary crash report, Maximiano Cadena, Jr. was driving westbound in the 200 block of W. Twohig Ave. when he struck the south curb on the right side of the road. Cadena overcorrected and subsequently struck a tree in the median. The report did not mention speed, but the images of the truck suggest that the crash happened at a higher rate of speed than the 30 mph speed limit.

Cadena was rushed to Shannon in an ambulance with two police escorts indicating significant injuries. He is still hospitalized and listed in critical condition, police said.
