Police Chase Ends in 'Violent Crash' on North Bryant

SAN ANGELO, TX — A high-speed chase between a suspect in a stolen SUV that started on Chadbourne St. and 15th St. ended in a major crash on San Angelo’s busiest north-south artery Sunday afternoon.

According to the San Angelo Police Supervisor Sgt. Travis Griffith, police were notified Sunday afternoon of a stolen vehicle in the vicinity of 15th St., and by 6:30 p.m. had located the SUV reported as stolen.

Police attempted to perform a traffic stop on the 24-year-old Hispanic female suspect driving the SUV, but she took off at a high rate of speed in the SUV.

Griffith said the entire pursuit was four blocks, because the suspect drove westbound into the busy Bryant Blvd. striking an innocent motorist driving a gray sedan northbound, the pursuit never really got under way.

“It was a pretty violent crash,” Griffith said.

His officers were just beginning to devise their pursuit procedures when the crash happened. “Before we could even get it evaluated, the driver was several blocks away,” Griffith said.

The suspect in the stolen vehicle sustained major injuries and Griffith characterized her condition as “stable.” She is at a nearby hospital. The passing motorist who was hit sustained minor injuries, Griffith said.

Griffith said police are looking at several charges related to the stolen vehicle and now the crash. SAPD Criminal Investigations Division and Motors Division are conducting full investigations of the crash scene, he said.

The only occupants of both vehicles were the drivers.
