Update: Woman Undergoes Surgery After Vicious Dog Attack in North San Angelo

SAN ANGELO, TX - This afternoon, the San Angelo Police Department provided more details into yesterday's "vicious dog attack" in north San Angelo.

Public Information Officer Tracy Gonzalez said, just before 2:20 p.m., police were dispatched to the 1100 block of Volney Street for the report of a vicious dog that attacked a woman and caused injury.

"The first officer arrived and found several subjects protecting themselves with shovels and PVC pipe from a large-breed dog that was running loose," Gonzalez said. "Medics arrived but were unable to immediately aid the injured woman due to the dog’s continued aggression."

She added that as the officer attempted to corral the dog to allow medics to aid the woman, the dog turned on the officer and bit him without release.

"Fearing further injury to himself or others at the scene, the officer drew his firearm and shot the dog two times," said Gonzalez. "The dog died at the scene."

The officer sustained minor injuries from the dog’s attack and was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment and later released. The injured woman was transported to a nearby hospital where she later underwent surgery.

Animal Control Personnel also responded to the scene, and no other injuries were reported.

"The dog’s owner reportedly received a citation for Dog at Large," Gonzalez stated.
