1 Dead Identified After Two Semis Collide on Wet Highway Near Baird

 

Early this morning, a trucker was killed when two semis collided about 12 miles south of Baird in Callahan County.

According to the Texas DPS, one semi was westbound on SH 36 when it hydroplaned. The roadway was drenched with standing water and it was raining, DPS stated.

After hydroplaning, the 2000 Freightliner towing a semi-trailer jackknifed, blocking the westbound lane. Right behind the jackknifed rig, a second semi, a 2007 Freightliner towing a trailer, also traveling westbound, struck the jackknifed rig.

The force of the crash killed the driver of the second rig. DPS identified him as Jonah Wayne Neal, 32, of Montgomery County, just north of Houston. The driver of the jackknifed rig was Antonio Elmil, 26, of Lake Placid, Florida. He was treated and released at the scene.

The crash happened at 12:38 a.m. Monday. DPS said the crash investigation is still open. The highway was closed for most of today for the investigation, according to a report at KTXS in Abilene.
