Motorcyclist Killed in Crash South of Winters

A motorcyclist lost his life last night on U.S. 83, just south of Winters.

According to the Texas DPS, a northbound motorcyclist was attempting to pass a vehicle when the crash happened. Traveling north on US 83, the motorcyclist began a passing maneuver into the oncoming lane of traffic to pass a slower-traveling vehicle in front of him. Traveling southbound at that time was a truck tractor hauling a semi-trailer.

The motorcyclist may have misjudged the clearance that the oncoming traffic afforded him because he veered further to the left and ran off the west side of the roadway to avoid hitting the semi. Right behind the semi, however, was another vehicle that the motorcyclist may not have seen.

The motorcyclist was killed when he struck the passenger side front of the vehicle behind the semi that was also traveling southbound.

The crash happened after dark at 7:08 p.m.

DPS will release more information on the crash tomorrow once the official crash report is released.
