Two Women Killed in Single-Vehicle Crashes

A 73-year-old Bronte woman died last night on US 277 after veering off the road and overcorrecting, rolling and landing in a pasture.

The crash occurred at roughly 10:17 p.m. approximately 9.7 miles south of Bronte, when Roberta Gale Hawkins, northbound, drifted off the road to the right in her 2002 Ford F-150. Hawkins then steered back left, a DPS crash report states, and jerked back right, exiting the roadway and traveling into the east bar ditch. Her vehicle then rolled and came to a rest in the pasture facing east.

Hawkins was not wearing a seatbelt, the report states, and was pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Coulter.

On Friday, a 25-year-old woman stationed at Dyess AFB was killed in a motorcyle crash FM 126, 7 miles South of Merkel in Taylor County at approximately 11:09 a.m.

A crash report from the DPS indicates that Leanne Destini Locascio was traveling north on FM 126 on her 2004 Honda motorcycle, when she failed to negotiate a curve, striking an advisory curve sign. Locascio lost control, overturned and was thrown from the bike. She was pronounced dead at 6:50 PM by Dr. Dissanaike of the University Medical Center in Lubbock. She was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
