Chevy Truck Catches Fire on Knickerbocker

A 1995 Chevrolet pickup caught fire while traveling down Knickerbocker Road Sunday afternoon. According to fire investigator Karla Steppe of the San Angelo Fire Department, the driver of the truck said that he heard a loud pop or bang. Immediately after the noise, the driver observed white smoke filtering up from underneath the hood of the engine.

As he was looking for a place to pull over, patrons in the Rosa’s Mexican Café parking lot flagged him down by informing that his truck was on fire.

The driver stopped straight-ahead on Knickerbocker and exited the truck just in time. A fire in the engine compartment was beginning to pierce the firewall to the passenger compartment.

Out of the truck, driver and onlookers watched as the truck’s engine compartment and cab became fully engulfed in flames.

The fire department responded and extinguished the blaze at 1:22 p.m. Sunday, blocking all lanes on Knickerbocker for some time.

Steppe said no one was injured and the truck is a total loss. “Based upon the fire patterns, the fire originated around the alternator,” she said.
