Long Time Tom Green County District Clerk Announces Retirement

SAN ANGELO, TX – Tom Green County District Clerk Sheri Woodfin announced her retirement Tuesday morning during the regular meeting of the Tom Green County Commissioners Court.

Woodfin, who has been District Clerk for 22 years, will retire Feb. 15, 2020.

An emotional Woodfin said at the beginning of her announcement. "This will be hard."  She choked back tears as she told the court. "I can't thank Tom Green County enough."

Woodfin has spent 30 plus years with the county and thanked her staff.  "My staff is the glue that holds it all together."

Woodfin said she wasn't looking for a job but the State of Texas Office of Court Administration offered her a job in which she can work from home.  Woodfin said during the meeting that she is taking care of her mother.

According to the Texas Association of Counties, the district clerk performs the duties assigned by the Texas Constitution as registrar, recorder and custodian of all court pleadings, instruments and papers that are part of any legal cause of action in the district courts; serves as clerk and custodian of all records for the District Courts; indexes and secures all court records, collects filing fees, and handles funds held in litigation and money awarded to minor; and coordinates the jury panel selection process among other duties.

The District Clerk is an elected office.  Woodfin was sworn into a four year term on Jan. 1, 2019.  Her term expires on Jan. 1, 2023.  Tom Green County Commissioners may appoint an interim District Clerk or call for a special election to fill the vacancy.

Earlier this year Tom Green County Clerk Elizabeth McGill also announced her retirement.
