Burning, Fireworks are Still OK in Tom Green County

SAN ANGELO, TX — Tom Green County Commissioners missed a deadline to ban the sale and use of certain types of fireworks on the Independence Day Holiday weekend July 1st through the 4th.  County Judge Steve Floyd said the deadline to ban aerial fireworks was June 15.

The Court also took no action on banning burning in the County during Tuesday morning’s regular meeting.  Floyd said, “Summer is finally here!”  referring to the extremely hot and dry conditions in the Concho Valley for several weeks.  Summer officially begins at 11:24 p.m. today.  Commissioners will evaluate conditions again next week and make a determination about the burn ban.  Pct. 4 Commissioner Bill Ford told the court this morning he wanted to ban burning, but the court took no action.

In other County business, Elections Administrator Vona Hudson told commissioners early voting for the July 8 City Council runoff begins Monday, June 26.  Early voting takes place in the Edd B. Keyes building 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 26 – 29 and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. June 30 and July 3.

Six polling locations will be open on election day, Saturday July 8, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.  Those locations are Angelo Bible Church 3506 Sherwood Way, Community Medical Center 3501 Knickerbocker Rd., MHMR 1501 W. Beauregard, Southland Baptist Church 4300 Meadow Creek, TxDOT 4502 Knickerbocker Rd Bldg E, and West Texas Rehabilitation Center 1925 University.

The runoff election is for San Angelo City Council Member, Single Member District 6 between Billie F. Dewitt and Steve Hampton.  Only voters who reside in SMD 6 are eligible to vote.

In other business, Commissioners authorized contracting with Kinney-Franke Architects for design-bid-build documents for the 3020 N. Bryant building.  The County will temporarily relocate the District Courts from the Tom Green County Courthouse to the old Wal-Mart building while the courthouse is being renovated.

Commissioners began budget hearings Tuesday as well.  The court will hold budget hearings each day this week and Wednesday and Thursday of next week.  Budget hearings are scheduled for July 6, 27 and 28  if necessary.
