Tom Green County Jail Receives Best Rating Ever From Jail Standards Commission

SAN ANGELO, TX – The Texas Commission on Jail Standards recently evaluated the Tom Green County Jail and issued an annual Certificate of Compliance.  Sheriff David Jones presented the certificate to Tom Green County Commissioners on Tuesday.

Jones thanked the jail staff and said the inspection was the best ever, “I wanted to say thanks to the staff who works there everyday. This is the best we’ve ever had.”

Pct. 4 Commissioner Bill Ford agreed, “I read the report and it was glowing!”

Tom Green County is currently in the process of building a new jail.  The $51 million project will have 328 beds and room to expand as needed.  The new jail is being constructed on County-owned land off of U.S. 277 North near the Roy K Robb detention center.  The County plans to also use the 288 beds in the current jail.  Once the new jail is open the County will have a total of 616 beds available to them.

County Commissioners also approved a Request for Services Quote for material testing at the new jail site.  Pct. 3 Commissioner Rick Bacon said the request was for necessary testing of soils and construction materials.  The quote opening date was set for June 22.

Commissioners then moved to exempt Construction Services Labs for earthwork at the jail site so that the company can begin testing immediately.

Commissioners also accepted a donation of 1,200 tons of state grade base from 4K Construction.  The base material will be used for the pad site for the new jail.  The material was taken from the new First Financial Bank construction site.

Commissioner Bacon said the contractor had installed the base material in the parking lot in anticipation of paving it with asphalt, “but the bank changed its mind and wanted concrete.”  So the contractor donated the material to the County.
