San Angelo/West Texas Prepares for Possible Severe Storms

SAN ANGELO, TX - When it comes to West Texas, the weather is unpredictable, and this is the time of year when storms can become severe. Today is one of those days. Currently, our area is under warning for severe storms that have the possibility to produce large hail, damaging winds, isolated tornadoes and deadly lightning.

The National Weather Service of San Angelo stated that this afternoon a dry line is heading into the western counties and are expected produce scattered showers and thunderstorms. The Big Country, and as far south as the Concho Valley, may be affected, and storms are expected to hit during the evening and early morning hours Wednesday.

Amy McCulloch with the NWS, during a phone conference this afternoon, said this afternoon storms will strengthen and move east over the area.

"We are expecting severe weather to start in our western counties probably after 3 to 4 p.m.," she said.

The first main line of storms is expected to move over the Big Country areas from Sweetwater to Abilene, but meteorologists expect another line of storms to cover much of the area from Ozona, Sonora and up through San Angelo, Abilene, and Haskell after midnight.

McCulloch said hail and isolated tornadoes are possible. At this time, these areas, including San Angelo, remain under tornado watch until 10 p.m.

The NWS said by mid-morning to afternoon Wednesday, the storms will move east and drier conditions are expected. This weekend, however, another upper level storm system will move into the area, bringing a chance of showers and thunderstorms to West Central Texas. A few of these storms may become strong to severe as well.
