Police Respond to Over 60 Accidents Tuesday

Sirens sounded from all over San Angelo as the police department responded to traffic accidents and calls for assistance Tuesday. The San Angelo Police Department and all emergency personnel are advising motorists not to drive as the accident toll rises. 

Tuesday morning, SAPD dispatch phones were ringing off the hook, SAPD Public Information Officer Tracy Gonzalez said. 

Tuesday morning, Officer Gonzalez provided the following update: "Dispatch advised that Charlie Co. Officers (the late night shift) have been held over to assist with responding to accidents, as well as stranded motorist calls...also, EMS response is extremely taxed due to their response to crashes, as well as injured parties who have fallen on the ice and injured themselves."

Officer Gonzalez has now relayed that between midnight and 2:00 p.m., the SAPD has responded to 61 accidents, three of which were major collisions, and 37 assist motorist calls.

"I would add another 20 or 25 to the assist motorist calls because there were times when we just could not check out while helping people," she said.

Police are urging caution on the motorways as icy conditions persist. Several San Angelo area school districts and offices have already stated plans to open at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12.
