City Veterans Day Celebrations Scheduled for Coming Monday

Most City offices will be closed Monday, Nov. 11, in observance of Veterans Day.

There will be no interruption of garbage collection or landfill operations.

Fairmount Cemetery, 1120 W. Avenue N, will host a Veterans Day celebration at 11 a.m. Nov. 11. Hosted by the Friends of Fairmount Cemetery, the event at the cemetery will feature Fort Concho’s artillery crew and bagpiper, and a keynote address from U.S. Rep. Mike Conaway.

More than 1,400 American flags have been placed on the graves of the veterans buried at Fairmount in preparation for the event. The cemetery is the final resting place for veterans of the Battle of San Jacinto, the Mexican War, the Indian Wars, the Civil War, both world wars, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. Several buffalo soldiers who served at Fort Concho are also buried at Fairmount, a designated Texas Historic Cemetery.

Observed each year on Armistice Day, which marked the end of World War I, Veterans Day celebrates the service of all U.S. military veterans.

Fort Concho, including the Barracks 1 Visitor Center, will be open from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Nov. 11 for self-guided tours. The fort’s artillery crew and its living history enthusiasts will also participate in the Veterans Day parade downtown at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9.

Southside and Carl Ray Johnson recreation centers, and Station 618 and Santa Fe Crossing senior centers will also be closed on Veterans Day.

City offices will reopen at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12.
