San Angelo Chamber of Commerce Supports Lake Nasworthy Trust Fund Proposition

SAN ANGELO, TX --

The San Angelo Chamber of Commerce board of directors voted Friday to support the City of San Angelo’s proposal to tap the Lake Nasworthy Trust Fund to improve recreational facilities at the lake and to defray some of the cost of replacing an aging sewer line that stretches across Lake Nasworthy.

Proposition A on the Nov. 5 ballot calls for use of $6 million of the Lake Nasworthy Trust Fund for lake improvements, with the balance (approximately $9 million) going towards the $32 million cost of expanding, reconfiguring and replacing the aging sewer service line. The city would issue debt to cover the remaining cost of the sewer project.

All registered voters in the city of San Angelo are eligible to vote in the election.

Early voting started Oct. 21 and ends Nov. 1.Election day is Tuesday, Nov. 5.

The $6 million is designated for lake improvements that include boat ramps, fishing piers, shoreline erosion control, and sandy beaches. In turn, the sewer project would mitigate the hazard of the current uncased pipe leaking or breaking and compromising lake water quality. It would also increase sewer capacity from 500,000 gallons/day to 2.5 million gallons/day, which would facilitate further development at the lake, as well as at the San Angelo Regional Airport.

“The Chamber board gave thoughtful consideration to this proposition,” said Chamber Board Chair Sheryl Pfluger, “and supports it for the protection of our valuable lake.”

The Chamber board also discussed the economic development opportunities at the airport that require the added sewer capacity.

“This proposal contains a prudent financial structure that includes lake improvements, economic development and conservation of natural resources,” said Chamber President/CEO Bruce R. Partain.

“We are a forward-looking community, and this proposal continues that legacy.”
