Is Heff's Burger Gone For Good?

SAN ANGELO, TX – Heff’s Burgers may be truly gone from San Angelo. The popular burger franchise is often “voted best burger," but it looks like it may be a while longer if they'll ever appear in San Angelo.

Nearly 6 months after Heffernan assured LIVE the restaurant would open in June of this year, Heff’s Burger is no closer to being opened. The building permit for the location has expired and it does not appear that another one has been filed. A sign in the new building's window indicates the CMS Properties out of Lubbock manages the property now. A call to the real estate company confirmed the structure is available for lease.

LIVE made multiple attempts to contact Heffernan to receive an update on the situation, but she was not available for comment.

LIVE! had previously reported on the trajectory of the restaurant in San Angelo and now it appears the story is coming to an end. In 2015, Inn of the Conchos sued Heff’s Burger for failure to $48,000 in back rent. The case was settled in court and Heff’s agreed to pay the owed rent and other court and attorney costs in 2018.

Heff’s customers were disappointed to learn the Abilene based restaurant appeared to be evicted from their North Bryant location. Visible on the front doors of the restaurant doors was a sign proclaiming the eviction and leaving loyal customers wondering where Heff’s would reopen for business. CEO Brenda Heffernan claimed at the time that they had left on their own due to many issues with the building.

Shortly after the eviction, LIVE reported that Heff’s would be reopening their doors on Knickerbocker, breaking ground next to the building that had been previously occupied by Stott’s Chiropractic.

The reopening at that location fell through and LIVE learned that Brenda Heffernan was planning to break ground on a completely new building on Sherwood Way in July of 2018. By April of 2019 the building seemed to be completed, but as soon as the structure was completed construction on the site ceased.

The official Heff’s website claims that new locations will be coming soon in Abilene and San Angelo, but no date has been provided.

Absolutely no loss to San Angelo.... One of the worst, nastiest places in San Angelo that there was while they were here. A day old Stripes bean burrito was a delicacy compared to the under-cooked, greasy low grade burgers they sent out from a kitchen that was always on the bottom of the scoring chart of the health board inspection ratings of restaurants in town......

Do you ever have a single nice or decent thing to say about anyone or anything? You sound like the most miserable person to ever walk the face of the earth. You must be a hoot to be around.....

I think you're finally catching on, Jim. I'm starting to think he might actually live in a trash can and go by the name of Oscar.

You know how some folks are glass half full and others are glass half empty? Well old D0c is a bone dry, dusty, filthy glass that at one time only held strychnine and killed all who touched it. Oh... it's a San Angelo glass, not one from Abilene or Odessa.... Not sure if he's ever been out of the city....

I’m not surprised that this building is open to lease. The bigger question is what’s happening with the fiasco of the Man Store & Fuentes restaurant?! Neither building is completed. Why hasn’t CoSA instructed them to repair these building or tear them down? How hard is it to repair these vintage buildings? What’s happened to the old Roosevelt Hotel building? They cleaned the place of asbestos & then left it! San Angelo needs to have an ordinance (if not already on the books) that buildings must be inhabitable within a certain period of time of issuing of their construction permits. There is WAY too much vacant fire hazard real estate just sitting downtown. If no one wants to fix up the buildings, tear them down & build parking for the ones that do take care of their property.

As a matter of fact, the Fuentes building is nearing completion, with the re-opening planned for sometime around the end of this month or 1st of November. They're working as fast as they can to repair/remodel their restaurant after the building next door fell on it. I, for one, am looking forward to having them back!

In defense of Heffs, this location on North Bryant has never been very friendly to renters/lease holders. I have known several businesses that have attempted to make a go at this location and just about all of them have experienced major problems with the owners in regards to maintenance and repairs to the building. Regardless of what you think about Heffs Burgers, I have no doubt that they had a tough time getting the owners to maintain the building in an acceptable manner to run a business. Before you knock Heffs, ask some of the previous lease holders about their experience with the owners.

I will agree with the deplorable Heff’s N. Bryant building issues, but that does little to explain the horrible, unsanitary conditions that they ran in their business. It also doesn’t have anything to do with all of their big talk about multiple restaurants & then never opening them. That’s an internal management problem & has nothing to do with their rented location.

Watch out Cmdr Darwin, these do-gooder Sunday school teachers that wear their pants pulled up past their belly buttons are gonna hurt your feelings and make you feel bad like they did to me about your comments....... LMAO !!!!!!
