Dallas Fashion Struts Into San Angelo

Big city fashion is often as expensive as it sounds. Five hours in the car, two tanks of gas, hotel rooms, dinner, drinks and lots of stamina for a marathon of trying on, testing out, and a virtual melting of the credit card.

For San Angelo fashionistas, keeping up with metropolitan mode can be an exercise in money and time management, and a lot of us just don’t have the wherewithal to keep our closets accordingly stocked.

That is, until Tiffany Nelson rolled into town promising an individual experience to each customer at her aptly named So Unique Boutique (2901 Sherwood Way).

“I like to keep it more ‘big city hits San Angelo,’” says the Dallas native, showing off one of her favorite colored pleather handbags.  “I try to keep it at a more affordable price point, and I like to not do the western thing. It seems like a lot of people kind of do the western thing, which isn’t me at all. “

Featuring blouses, boots, jeans, bags and accessories from over 20 Dallas stores, So Unique is San Angelo’s go-to boutique for big city fashion. But Nelson says she’s not just capitalizing on the Dallas trend.

“To keep it unique so to speak, I only carry one of each purse or one of each necklace, so no two people in town would have the same accessory,” she says. And that’s a mission she’s holding to: not even if one were to get down on hands and knees and beg would she duplicate a sold item.

Nelson is no stranger to San Angelo, or the boutique business either, for that matter. In fact, she got her start and motivation for her first tanning and clothing store while working at Suntrax Tanning as a finance student at ASU.

Following graduation, she returned to Dallas and it wasn’t long before she and her college sweetheart reconnected and took their vows. Soon after rekindling the relationship they moved to Comanche, where husband Coty Nelson had taken a job.

“I owned a tanning salon and boutique in a town called Comanche…I lived there for two years and opened a store there and loved it, but my husband took a job out here so we had to move,” Nelson said. “My husband really pushed me. He said, ‘Tiffany, do the same thing. You really loved it.’”

And that little push was all it took. On Saturday, Nov. 4, Tiffany Nelson opened up So Unique Boutique at 2901 Sherwood Way to a party of about 30 San Angeloans with fashion sense.

Her first sale was full outfit for a fall photo shoot, and Nelson looks forward to offering that same service to future customers.

“I just want to keep everything unique, so that it’s not what San Angelo already has. I want to bring in something different,” Nelson says. “It’s… affordably priced trendy women’s clothing.”
