San Angelo's SATV Brings Home Six Statewide Awards
The City of San Angelo’s Public Information Office won six statewide awards – one first-place honor and five second-places – for its programming on SATV at the annual conference of the Texas Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors on Thursday night.
San Angelo took top honors in the Use of Humor category for a commercial starring swimsuit-clad Parks and Recreation Director Carl White about the opening weekend of Love Municipal Pool. When shown at Thursday’s awards dinner, the spot brought down the house. The pool commercial also won a second-place award for Event/Program Promotion.
San Angelo won second-place awards in the following categories:
- Interview/Talk Show for an episode of “theCITY” with Public Information Officer Anthony Wilson and San Angelo Police Officer Tracy Gonzalez talking about public information issues. San Angelo finished behind Allen but ahead of Austin.
- Public Health/Public Safety for “Protecting Your Home (What You Should Know),” a program produced with the San Angelo Police Department on burglar-proofing homes.
- Partnership Production for “San Angelo: A West Texas Oasis,” a video touting the community’s virtues. The production was aided by narrator Sonny Cleere, McLaughlin Advertising, the Chamber of Commerce and the Convention & Visitors Bureau, Lucas Oil Production Studios, Angelo Civic Theatre and Jeska Bailey Photography, Angelo State University and Danny Meyer, Clinton Bailey, Fort Concho, Goodfellow Air Force Base and Ty Meighan.
- Kurt Ugland Programming Impact Award for “San Angelo: A West Texas Oasis.” The Ugland award is considered TATOA’s chief honor.
“It’s gratifying when our peers applaud the work we do,” said Brian Groves, the City’s Multimedia Coordinator. “But what really excites us is the opportunity to tell the stories of our colleagues and the tremendous public service they provide our community. We’re brimming with ideas of how we can do even more of that even better. Stay tuned!”
Much of the programming can still be seen on SATV, the City’s government access channel on Suddenlink cable channel 17. It can also be watched on a YouTube playlist titled “City of San Angelo TATOA Programming Finalists 2013” at youtube.com/CityofSanAngeloTx.
TATOA’s programming awards drew 165 entries from 25 organizations across the state. TATOA is a professional organization of those responsible for telecommunication policies, services and video programming in local governments.
In June, the City’s Public Information Office won two statewide awards – second place for Best Use of Social Media and third place for Best Media Relations – from the Texas Association of Municipal Information Officers.
The Public Information Office also crafted the winning applications for two Texas Municipal League awards – for City Spirit for the annual neighborhood blitz and for Public Works for a stormwater education program – received earlier this month. San Angelo was the only double-winner at the TML state conference, collecting two of the five awards given to cities with populations greater than 25,000.
