Brownwood Teen Drowns During Labor Day Weekend

 

Brownwood, TX- This past Sunday, Sept. 4, during the Labor Day weekend, a 17-year-old Brownwood High School (BHS) senior drowned at Mill Pond Park in San Saba.

As reported by local media and surrounding areas, the local teen was identified as D’Avion Wasson. Wasson was the starting point guard for the Brownwood High School varsity basketball team.

It was reported that the incident happened just before 6:00 p.m. News Channel 25 stated that, “Police said 17-year-old D'Avion Wasson was trying to cross the 60-yard-pond. When he reached halfway, he went underwater and never came back up.”

Other swimmers who were nearby were able to find Wasson and pull him out of the water. After getting Wasson to shore, the witnesses began to administer CPR due to him being unresponsive.

After paramedics arrived on scene, they transported him to a hospital in Lampasas. Upon arrival, Wasson was pronounced dead at the hospital.

A press release from Brownwood ISD included that, “Two weeks ago, D’Avion started his senior year at Brownwood High School, [and was] excited about the academic and athletic opportunities a new year brings,” stated Brownwood ISD Superintendent, Dr. Joe Young.  “Today is a difficult day as we realize his infectious smile will be missing when we return to school. Our crisis response team, including counselors and local ministers, will be available at BHS tomorrow morning for all students and staff members who need help dealing with this tragedy. Brownwood ISD extends our sincerest condolences to his family and friends, and we appreciate all the positive thoughts and prayers in the days ahead.”

A mural for Wasson was painted on a window at BHSin his honor. Mitch Moore, the Principal for BHS announced that a prayer vigil will be held in Wasson's honor at the football game Friday night, Sept. 9.
