Large Drug Bust Near Amarillo

 

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) conducted a commercial vehicle inspection Thursday on IH-40, yielding over 11 pounds of cocaine valued at over $677,000.

At approximately 6:23 p.m., a DPS trooper conducted an inspection on a 2013 Chevrolet pickup towing a flatbed trailer, which was traveling eastbound on IH-40, near Vega in Oldham County, close to Amarillo.

During the inspection, the trooper discovered the illegal drugs concealed in one of two vehicles on the trailer. The DPS Criminal Investigations Division (CID) responded to assist the trooper conduct the investigation. CID special agents determined that the driver was unaware that the illegal drugs were inside the vehicle.

CID special agents, with assistance from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), conducted a follow up investigation that led to the arrest of five people in Michigan. Agents also seized two weapons and a large amount of currency.

The illegal drugs were allegedly being transported from Phoenix, Arizona to Ferndale, Michigan.
