Lake View's Playoff Hopes Dashed Against Monterey

SAN ANGELO, TX-- The Lake View Chiefs hopes for making the postseason were lost after the Lubbock Monterey Plainsmen pulled away to earn a 14-4 victory in a District 4-5A baseball game.

“We hit the ball well and we held their pitching well. I think we were in double digits for hits,” said Lake View Head Coach Chad Kinney. “We had runners on and things like that, and if we’re close or ahead we’re able to do some different things offensively instead of relying on base to base type stuff.”

After losing seven straight district games the Chiefs defeated Lubbock High 6-3 last Saturday to keep their playoff hopes alive late in the season.

The Chiefs were poised to make a late season push towards the playoffs, but Lubbock Monterey looked hungry after losing six of their last seven district games.

The game was close early on as both teams managed to put runs on the board, but a critical fifth inning by the Plainsmen really defined the game and put things out of reach for the Chiefs.

Coach Kinney stated “Well through five innings we got the first two outs of the inning and just couldn’t find the third one. I think that was the difference in the game. We should have went into at least the sixth inning with three nothing or three to one lead and had a chance to really add to our lead not being so far behind, so I think that’s the difference in the game.”

Noah Arambula started the game for Lake View going five innings in a loss before being relieved by Jaden Haynes who finished the game for the Chiefs. Caylor Dannevik earned the victory for the Plainsmen, and stalled the Chiefs offense when he needed to despite allowing Lake View to rack up more than ten hits.

Although the Chief’s season is over they will continue to fight and try to close out the season strong. Coach Kinney stated his team was “Always wanting a win. That’s the main thing. We’re out here to win and that’s what we’re going to try to do.”

Lake View (6-18-1) will face Lubbock Monterey (15-14) again this Friday April 20 in an away game in Lubbock at 7p.m.
