No. 9 Wall Routs Sonora, Finishes Undefeated in District Play

WALL, TX- The ninth-ranked Wall Hawks defeated district rival Sonora 55-29 to stay undefeated in district play as they march on towards the playoffs.

“It's been a great district run for our guys who had to overcome a lot of adversity,” said Wall Head Coach Brian Blackburn. “We had some juniors and some seniors really step up to help us go 10-0 in district.”

Sonora's efficiency from beyond the arc gave them an early 14-11 lead over the Hawks in a a game that looked like it would be competitive.

Wall had trouble finding the inside of Sonora's zone defense early on offense, but stayed in the game with solid defensive play, which Coach Blackburn attributed to communication.

“Tons of communication defensively,” Blackburn emphasized. “Our guys [were] doing a great job of talking defensively and that sparks everything that we want to do.”

Although the Hawks only managed to score seven points in the second, they still came of the half on top 19-17 after only allowing Sonora to score three points in the quarter.

In the third quarter, the Hawks began to break down Sonora's zone getting easy buckets within the interior of the Broncos defense.

“I thought we made some of the shots we missed in the first half. That's what we told the guys at half time. Just keep getting good high percentage shots and they'll start falling,” said Coach Blackburn. “I thought we just rushed a couple shots there in the first half. In the third quarter we started making some of those, which helps your confidence and then everything was good from there.”

At the end of three Wall extended their lead over Sonora 36-25 as the Broncos looked tired.

After finding their groove on offense Wall took over momentum of the game only allowing Sonora to score four points in the final quarter.

It was an all around team effort for the Hawks as they had four players with eight points or more.

Leading the charge were Sterlyn Hartman and Brandon Dusek with 12 points a piece.

Baylor Halfmann once again was vital factor for Wall as well knocking down big shots from beyond the arc to finish with nine total points.

Wall (28-2, 10-0) remained undefeated in district play and looks to continue their hot streak into the playoffs.
