Central's McIvor Picks Up First Division 1 Offer

SAN ANGELO, TX-- San Angelo Central junior quarterback Maverick McIvor took Class 6A by storm in his first season as QB1 for the Bobcats.

During the 2017 campaign the son of former UT quarterback, Rick McIvor, threw for 3,369 yards and 43 touchdowns while adding another 888 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. Colleges from around the country have noticed that.

On Monday, Maverick announced via Twitter he had received an offer from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. The offer is the first of what will likely be many for Central's gunslinger.

This past Friday Central Offensive Coordinator Kevin Crane put out a tweet saying that Ohio State Head Coach Urban Myer and Co-Offensive Coordinator Ryan Day made the long trek from Columbus, Ohio, to San Angelo to scout McIvor.

"I feel it is always good to have our program mentioned in a positive way, especially in a nationwide sense," Central Head Coach Brent Davis said.

With areas like the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and Houston, it's easy for Division 1 college coaches to dip in to those high populations and find the next superstar for their program. Henry Teeter, who completed his last season with the Bobcats in 2017, noted the difficulty in his recruiting process on Twitter at the end of 2017.

"It;s such a struggle being an athlete and trying to get recruited from west Texas/non-metropolitan areas," Teeter said in the tweet. "You don't have to be from a big city to have talent!"

But, just as Teeter used social media for that post, social media can put any player from any town in front of a college coach with just one click.

"I feel with today’s technology and media coverage, that college programs know where the players are and have the means to find them," Davis said.

So far Teeter, an All-State selection in 2017 and Holland's Award winner, has received Division 1 offers from Angelo State, Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth, Texas State and the University of Texas-Permian Basin. Boise State and Texas Tech have offered Teeter a spot as a preferred walk-on for their programs. Trinity University, a Division 3 school in San Antonio, has also offered Teeter a spot on their team. However, Division 3 schools cannot offer athletic scholarships. Teeter has also drawn interest from Holy Cross in Massachusets.
