The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly: Week 5

The gloomy weather alone could headline the ugly in a week that saw some interesting results around the area.

The Good: Eldorado and Cross Plains play one of the best games of the week

I suspected Eldorado and Cross Plains would be an entertaining game. I didn't think it would be as good as it ultimately was. Cross Plains won the game 13-6 in a defensive tug-of-war that felt like a moral victory for Eldorado, who watched the Buffaloes hang 40 points on them a year ago. Cross Plains' clinching touchdown came from senior running-back Creed Goode in the closing stages of the fourth quarter to give Cross Plains the narrow, one-touchdown lead and Goode's second of the game. Eldorado's defense looked good, holding Goode under 100-yards for just the second time all season. This could be a sign of things to come for Eldorado later on in the year. However, Cross Plains did well rushing the ball with three other ball carriers. That Cross Plains trio of seniors Joe Crocket and Kaiden Petree, and sophomore Caleb Hernandez rushed for a combined 163 yards on 29 carries in the win. Eldorado (1-4) will host a 3-2 Irion County squad this Friday while Cross Plains (3-2) will have their bye week.

Christoval finds the win column

It's rare to expect much out of a freshman. After all, they're young and inexperienced, trying to learn the game. Well, Christoval Freshman Quarterback Brayden Wilcox may have figured things out for the Cougars. In a 51-14 romp over Ranger, the freshman accounted for 409 yards of Christoval's 528 yards of total offense. Wilcox tallied 253 of his 409 yards and five touchdowns via the ground. The win snapped the Cougar's five-game losing streak and may give some life to a promising team.

The Bad: Four teams from district 2-6A are undefeated after the first week of district play

While Central is among the undefeated teams, they're in for a dogfight from here on out. Central (4-0, 0-0), Midland Lee (5-0, 1-0), Permian (5-0, 1-0), and Tascosa (5-0, 1-0) all have undefeated records following week five. This proves that district two is STACKED with quality teams at the top. There's no telling right now who will wear the crown in district, but there are threats from all over to Central's reign. The Bobcats will get to throw their first punches in the battle royale that is district play when they travel to Ratliff Stadium to take on Odessa High (2-3, 0-1) this Friday at 7:30 p.m.

The Ugly: Anyone trying to stop Sonora's offense

We're halfway through the season and the Broncos are averaging nearly 51 points per game. Their latest game, a 64-22 victory over Crane, featured another offensive explosion. Sonora lit up the stat-sheet for 627 total yards of offense. Senior Quarterback, and Mr. Texas High School Football Player of the Year Nominee, Kaden Cordell threw for 319 yards and three touchdowns. Cordell also added 26 yards rushing to his credit. Senior Running-Back Jarrett Jackson carried the ball 14 times for 180 yards and four touchdowns. Jackson also scored a touchdown on an 83 yard pass play from Cordell. This is an offense that you can't stop, only contain.
