McIvor Rushes Central Past Shoemaker

KILLEEN, TX-- A win is a win, no matter how you cut it. Despite a scrappy showing from the Killeen Shoemaker Grey Wolves, the Central Bobcats engineered an impressive comeback in their 52-42 victory in Killeen on Thursday night.

“I’m proud of the way our guys fought,” Central Head Coach Brent Davis said after the game. “The Offense kept fighting and the defense kept fighting. I’ll take a win any day of the week.”

Even though the Bobcats only tallied 176 yards passing, junior quarterback Maverick McIvor was the epicenter of Central’s comeback. The gunslinger accounted for 373 yards of total offense and six touchdowns for the Bobcats. Overall, the Bobcats had 448 yards of offense with 272 yards coming on the ground.

“[Maverick] was huge for us. He’s a gamer,” said an enthusiastic Davis. “We were just running him because that’s what [Shoemaker] was giving us.”

Senior Jesse Scott finished the night with 90 total yards and two touchdowns. Henry Teeter accounted for two touchdowns, with one coming through the air. Austin Barron and Jaden Coates finished with a touchdown apiece in the victory.

The two teams traded punts on their opening drives before Shoemaker opened the scoring.

After working their way up from their own six yard-line, Shoemaker senior running back Ozias Wright took a handoff around the right side of Central’s defense for a 73-yard touchdown run to open the game, making the score 7-0.

Central’s second drive would end at their own 31 yardline with a 19-yard punt, setting Shoemaker up at midfield. The Grey Wolves’ junior quarterback Kevin Mial would take the ball himself into the endzone from 18 yards out, extending Central’s deficit to 14-0 in the first quarter.

After a Shoemaker punt to open the second quarter, Central would find the endzone on a 43-yard drive capped off by a 15-yard run by Maverick McIvor, narrowing the deficit to 14-7 early in the second quarter.

Shoemaker’s next drive would be happily short lived as Wright took the ball 63 yards to the house on the first play of the drive, extending their lead 21-7 midway in the second quarter.

Central would score twice unanswered after the explosive play from Shoemaker. Trickeration by Davis’ squad caught Shoemaker off-guard when Henry Teeter took a handoff from McIvor and threw it back to McIvor in the endzone for a 15-yard touchdown However, a missed extra-point on the last Central touchdown would keep the Bobcats behind 21-20 with 1:31 left in the half.

Shoemaker would add another touchdown at the stroke of halftime on a 42 yard quarterback run, pushing the deficit back to 28-20.

Out of halftime, Central struck first on a 74-yard drive helped by a personal foul penalty and capped off with a 14-yard pass from McIvor to senior receiver Jesse Scott Jr. A failed two-point conversion left the Bobcats down by two points at 28-26 early in the third quarter.

With the score 34-26 following another Shoemaker score, Central struck pay dirt again when senior running back Austin Barron caught a screen pass from McIvor and waltzed in the endzone for the score. Another failed two-point conversion left the Bobcats behind 34-32 midway through the third quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, Central recovered the fumbled kick by Shoemaker. The Bobcats quickly marched down the short field and gained the lead five yards out on a pass from McIvor to Teeter.

Central’s defense held strong on the next series, limiting Shoemaker to just two yards and forcing a punt. That was the point where the Bobcats never looked back, scoring two more times and allowing just one score.
