The Crusade to Resurrect Semi-Professional Football in San Angelo

SAN ANGELO, TX — Alex Hughes loves football.  In fact, the tall athletic San Angeloan is on a crusade to create a semi-professional football team in San Angelo.

Calling the yet-to-be-formed team the Crusaders, Hughes is recruiting players, coaches, staff and support personnel for the fledgling effort.  His goal is to form the team in time for the 2018 spring season in Texas, which runs February through June.  Not naming the league or where the team will hold games while those details are being negotiated, Hughes says the Crusaders will play an independent schedule locally if they can’t join an already existing league in time for 2018.

Hughes, a veteran of the U.S. Army, says he wants to bring his military experience, particularly management, to the team.  He says the semi-pro team would boost the local economy, “When a team comes to San Angelo to play, they will stay in a hotel, eat at local restaurants and shop in San Angelo stores.”

LIVE! asked Hughes about the team name.  Hughes said, “It will be a Christian based team first and foremost.  We want to conquer the league so our mission will be like a crusade.”

San Angelo’s previous experience with semi-professional football is mixed.  According to previous LIVE! reports, The San Angelo Stampede (later called the Stampede-Express) played off and on from 2004 to 2013.  For the 2014 season, the team was renamed the San Angelo Bandits. Randy Sanders moved the team to Belton after the 2016 season and renamed it the Centex Cavalry.

Alex Hughes is currently recruiting players, coaches, staff and support personnel for the semi-pro San Angelo Crusaders.  He can be reached on face book under San Angelo Crusaders, by email at [email protected], and by phone or text at 325-320-7230.
